Paragraph One (Introduction)

In the given set of materials, the reading passage and the lecture deal with the emerald ash borer

The author of the reading assumes that there are several ways to solve the problem which ash trees are destroyed by emerald ash borer, whereas the lecture aruges against it by providing three compelling rebuttals.

 

Paragraph Two (Body1)

1. First of all, the professor points out that it is not effective to remove the affected trees.

2. It is mentioned that trees takes one or two years to show symptoms of an infestation. By that time, the borers have already spread to nearby trees. Also this method can only work in urban area because there is too many trees in forest to inspect.

3. It challenges the point made in the rading passage that removing the affected trees can prevent the spread of borers to healthy trees.

 

Paragraph Three (Body2)

4. Seondly, the professor states that a chemical tretment is highly problematic.

5. He elaborates on this by mentioning that application of insecticide results in groundwater contamination. Additionally, if there are a large of larvae, they can disrupt the circulatory system of the trees.

6. This is opposition to the reading passage which states that the adult borers can be stopped by chemical treatment.

 

Paragraph Four (Body3)

7. Finally, the lecturer, on the other hand, argues that biological pest control have a number of issues. 

8. He puts forth the idea that the parasitic wasps aren't able to survive in cold winter. Besides, these non-native parasite leads to unexpected results such as killing other types of inspects by the wasps. 

9. This refutes the reading passage, which states that this application of wasps can reduce the population of borers.
